Partying With Purpose: How BC Crab Brings Us To The Same Table

Can partying help support your local food systems, build community, and create space for connection and dialog? We believe it can, because we did it!

Of course, we’re talking about partying with purpose, and that purpose is food. Specifically the pleasure of the community coming together to break bread, or in our case, crack crab.

This summer we’ve taken part in a few epic crustacean celebrations. We hung out at the BC Seafood Festival, connecting with crab curious consumers and supporting Victoria based crab-party-aficionados, Crabben, in hosting the BC Crab Kitchen Party atop Mt. Washington. We paired up with the Area A Crab Association to support the Prince Rupert Seafest crab eating contest (guarantee a few folks got to see a different side of their neighbours at that one!). We dropped in to share knowledge and add some crab to the bucket at Crabben’s signature event of the summer – The Vancouver Island Crab Fest. And, as if our plates weren’t already stacked high enough, we hosted our own celebration for a second year – the False Creek Crab Festival!

At all of these events we watched people laugh, make new connections, learn, and get incredibly messy (that’s just how crab cracking goes!). It was wholesome, joyful, and further brought our point home. The collective experience of sharing food connects us all as humans with two universally understood feelings – joy and full bellies.

Is there a single holiday, celebration, or key milestone that doesn’t involve sharing of food? None that we can think of.

We feast at weddings, acknowledgements of success, key milestones, and celebrations of birth. We share food for comfort in times of loss and grief. And hopefully, we all have that friend who will show up at our door with a tub of ice cream and two spoons when we’re sad.

When you put it that way, crab festivals aren’t just about savouring fresh, local seafood—they’re about something much bigger. They bring our community together, celebrate the hard work of local crab fishermen, and provide the opportunity to learn more about the seafood that is a cornerstone of our coastal food systems.

So if you haven’t made it out to a crab festival yet this season, why should you make the next one a noted event on your calendar? Let’s break it down.

Celebrating of Community Connection

Crab festivals are like a big family reunion, except instead of distant cousins, you’re connecting with your neighbours, local fishermen, and even folks visiting from out of town. It’s a place where stories tumble out in giggles over cracked shells and buttery fingers. These events foster a sense of belonging and remind us all that we’re part of something bigger—a community that cares about where its food comes from and the people who bring it to the table.

Getting to Know Your Local Seafood

It’s one thing to read about sustainability; it’s another to meet the fishermen who work tirelessly to bring fresh, responsibly harvested crab to our tables. In a world where so much of our food travels thousands of miles before it lands on our plates, dungeness crab festivals put a spotlight on local, sustainable BC seafood. These festivals provide a unique opportunity to learn about the seafood industry directly from those who know it best and allow you to walk away with a new appreciation for the journey your crab fest meal has taken from ocean to plate.

Supporting Local Harvesters and Their Families

Behind every crab boil plate is a community of hardworking fishermen and their families. Remember what we said about partying with purpose? This is what we’re talking about. These events are way more than just a good time—they’re a way to support local livelihoods, traditions, and coastal communities. Every ticket sold contributes to helping sustain the people who are the backbone of this coastal way of life. By attending a crab festival, you’re doing more than indulging in delicious food; you’re giving back to the community that makes it all possible.

Pure, Wholesome Fun

Who couldn’t use a few more light giggles in a heavy world? Let’s not forget the simple joy of a crab festival. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of cracking open a perfectly cooked crab, especially when you’re surrounded by the laughter and energy of people who are just as excited about it as you are. Whether you’re there for the live music, the cooking demos, cool bevs on a hot day, or just to get your hands on some of the freshest crab you’ll ever taste, these festivals offer something for everyone.

The crab festivals we’ve been so grateful to support this summer have been more than just events—they’re a celebration of our coastal heritage, a way to connect with our community, and a reminder of the importance of supporting local seafood. Food binds us all together not only as a physical need, but also as a global understood language. Sweet, savoury, sour, spicy, umami – we can all relate. So next time you see a crab festival come up on your feed, grab your buds, bring your appetite, and get ready for a day that’s as meaningful as it is fun. You won’t just be enjoying great food—you’ll be part of something bigger.
